Airborne concerns return after Keselowski accident

March 9th, 2010

DARLINGTON, jordan shoesS.C. — Elliott Sadler didn’t seem to care much about who was at fault in the simmering feud between Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski. He was much more concerned about the No. 12 car flipping through the air after the two drivers clashed Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
”I can’t comment on what happened between [Edwards] and [Keselowski], because I don’t know the past history and stuff like that,” Sadler said at Darlington Raceway, where he was one of five drivers testing tires for Goodyear. “I am concerned that the 12 car got upside down so fast at Atlanta, a mile-and-a-half race track. That concerns me more than the payback stuff.”

Sadler would know — twice shoeshe’s been involved in scary airborne crashes at Talladega Superspeedway, a restrictor-plate venue where vehicular flips are far from uncommon. But what worried everyone was the sight of such a crash at Atlanta, a fast intermediate track where cars don’t usually leave the racing surface in the spectacular manner that Keselowski’s did Sunday after being bumped in a retaliatory fashion by Edwards.

“We’ve got to do something about cheap shoeskeeping these cars on the ground,” Sadler said. NASCAR president Mike Helton said the sanctioning body was exploring ways of doing just that.

“The bigger topic is the 12 car gettingwholesale shoes airborne at a mile-and-a-half track, which we typically don’t see,” Helton said on a conference call with reporters. “It’s been years since we’ve seen that. So a lot of our effort [Monday], [Tuesday] and until we find [an answer] to it is figuring out how it happened, why it happened and what we can do to prevent it from happening in the future.”

NASCAR has stepped up its investigation nike shoesinto airborne accidents since late last year, when Ryan Newman’s high-flying crash at Talladega (watch video) prompted a new round of testing. Earlier this season, officials announced that the rear wing, part of the current Sprint Cup car since its inception, eventually will be replaced by a blade-type spoiler similar to the kind once common on vehicles in NASCAR’s premier series.
NASCAR has said that the change is being made cheap nike shoesfor aesthetic as well as competitive reasons, and has emphasized that it does not believe the rear wing is solely to blame for airborne accidents. But clearly, drivers have another view. The three Sprint Cup drivers at Darlington on Tuesday — Sadler, Clint Bowyer and Marcos Ambrose — all tested cars outfitted with spoilers, which will go into effect this spring. Brett Bodine, NASCAR’s director of cost research, was in Darlington to view the Goodyear test.

“We’ve had a lot of cars going airborne the last Nike Air Jordan Shoescouple of years,” Sadler said. “Brett Bodine is here with us [Tuesday], because we’re testing the spoiler. We’re talking about a lot of different scenarios and a lot of different things. The spoiler seems to be better for that, keeping cars on the ground, which is what we need. As a driver, that’s my concern. Let’s keep these things on the ground.”

But Bowyer wondered if anything would have keptair jordan Keselowski’s car on the ground Sunday once it turned around on the high-speed Atlanta track. The vehicle went airborne even though the flaps designed to help keep it on the racing surface clearly deployed.

“I don’t think anything is meant to go 190 mph backward, no matter what it is,” Bowyer said. “You can turn one of these tractor trailers around running 200 mph, and it’s probably going to flip over. That’s asking a lot. The roof flaps and the things they’ve done to keep these cars on the ground in my opinion are just incredible — the wrecks they’ve saved, probably the lives they’ve saved. They’ve done a good job of keeping these cars on the ground, but like I said, that’s asking a lot right there. That’s one of the fastest tracks on the circuit and probably the fastest part of the race track. I don’t know what’s going to keep it on the ground.”

How did ‘The Hurt Locker’ defy the odds at the Oscars?

March 9th, 2010

It’sjordan shoes amazing that “The Hurt Locker” won best picture at the Oscars despite having three strikes against it. “The Hurt Locker” didn’t feature A-list stars. It wasn’t successful at the box office. And maybe, worst of all: it was about the Mideast war, a topic usually cursed at the Academy Awards.

So how did it pull offshoes this Oscar miracle?

For starters, “The Hurt Locker” had some high-caliber oomph behind it. It was distributed by Summit, a studio with bold leaders who had deep pockets and something to prove. Flush with money from the “Twilight” movies, Summit wanted to be taken seriously as an artistic player in Hollywood.
Early on, Summit hired cheap shoesCynthia Swartz and her Oscar soldiers at 42West to head up its academy campaign. Swartz had been a key player in the past blitzkriegs behind “Chicago” (and other Miramax flicks when she was still a commander in Harvey Weinstein’s army), “The Departed,” “Crash” and “No Country for Old Men” and other successful award champs.

Swartz likes to takewholesale shoes on daredevil challenges. A few years ago, for example, she adopted a gritty, hip-hop film called “Hustle & Flow” just to see if she could ram it past the academy’s fuddy-duddy bias. Bingo. She ended up nabbing a best-actor nomination for Terence Howard and reaped a win for best song (”It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”).

The initial groundswell ofnike shoes support for “The Hurt Locker” came from a pure, heroic source: the film critics. It hadn’t fared well on the awards front at first. It competed last year at the Indie Spirits, for example, and only reaped nominations for actors Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. Nothing for picture, director or screenplay.

But when “The Hurt Locker” entered this year’s derby, things were different. It gathered momentum quickly, launching a bandwagon that was hard to stop. The Indie Spirits’ rival award, the Gotham, named it best picture. It swept the film critics’ trifecta: Los Angeles, New York and National Society. Those are critics’ groups comprised of mostly print-based, cynical, gritty journalists who are renowned for picking quirky stuff like “Mulholland Drive” that doesn’t break through into the Oscars. Then “The Hurt Locker” won best picture from the Critics’ Choice Awards. That was odd because it’s a prize bestowed by members of the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. They’re largely part of the junket press just like Golden Globe voters. Both groups tend to be similar in taste to Oscar voters.

The Golden Globes picked “Avatar,” cheap nike shoesbut that wasn’t too strange: they’ve been out of sync with Oscar voters four out of the past five years. Then something extraordinary occurred. “The Hurt Locker” won laurels from the directors’ and producers’ guilds, which usually predict what wins best picture at the Oscars. Think about it: the producers — people in charge of generating profit — endorsed a financially unsuccessful movie. That meant that “The Hurt Locker” had not only crossed over from the film critics to the film industry, but that it landed with nuclear force.

As “The Hurt Locker” headed into the Academy Awards, it was clear that it could beat the odds and actually win. When nominations came out, “The Hurt Locker” and “Avatar” tied for the most: nine. Right behind, with eight, was “Inglourious Basterds.”

“The Hurt Locker” positionedNike Air Jordan Shoes itself as little David battling Goliath (”Avatar”), a shrewd move since everybody always roots for the little guy. In this case, though, it wasn’t a guy. Its filmmaker was a sexy gal, Kathryn Bigelow, who just so happened to be the ex-wife of Goliath – “Avatar’s” James Cameron. What irresistible drama! Even better, if Oscar voters picked sexy Team Bigelow to endorse, they got a bonus. They got to make history by giving the Oscar for best director to a woman for the first time — a breakthrough long overdue.

Looking back, maybe “Avatar” never had a realistic chance of beating “The Hurt Locker.” No sci-fi movie has ever won best picture. Only two ever got nominated: “Star Wars” and “E.T.” “Basterds” had a realistic chance of sneaking by them both considering it won best ensemble at the SAG Awards, a prize that’s tattled twice before on Oscar best-picture upsets in the works: “Crash” and “Shakespeare in Love.” But its push came too late. If only Harvey Weinstein had given up on “Nine” and jumped aboard his “Basterds” horse earlier, he might have ridden it to victory. Looking back, I think “Basterds” was the only film that could’ve stopped the “Hurt Locker” bandwagon.

Summit hasn’t revealed how much it spent on its academy campaign, but a source close to the film insists that it was modest. An Oscar campaigner behind a rival film up for best picture (not “Avatar”) scoffs at that claim. Some Oscar-watchers believe that 20th Century Fox spent the most of all Oscar campaigns this year on behalf of “Avatar,” but that’s hard to establish. “Avatar” was released at Oscar time. Its expenditures for an awards blitz were inter-mingled with regular PR, advertising and marketing.

Even if “Avatar” did spend the most, it couldn’t stop the “Hurt Locker” juggernaut.air jordan Nothing could, not even a few suicide bombs set off by “The Hurt Locker” troop themselves. The movie that started out with three Oscar strikes against it ended up having three more near the end of the derby: accusations that it wasn’t accurate, accusations that it was too accurate (an army sergeant claims the movie ripped off his own story) and the embarrassment of its producer being banned from the Oscars ceremony because he broke campaign rules with offensive emails. Together, they added up to a serious plot complication — another twist that looked like it had been ripped from a Hollywood movie just like the whole setup of an ex-husband and wife squaring off with David vs. Goliath movies in the Oscars coliseum.

In the end, the best-picture Oscar victory of “The Hurt Locker” is more than just a great thing for Summit. It’s good for the Oscars because it was championed all through derby season by film critics who believed strongly in its quality and only had the most noble of motives.

But why did all of these awards, including the Oscars, agree on this Mideast war movie after previously pooh-poohing others like “In the Valley of Elah” and “Jarhead”? Probably because “The Hurt Locker” doesn’t force viewers to make a political judgment about the war. Instead, it forces viewers to experience first hand the terror and horror of what it’s like to live in a sun-baked hell where everything could, literally, blow up in your face at any moment.

Researchers: AIDS virus can hide in bone marrow

March 7th, 2010

WASHINGTON — TheAir Max virus that causes AIDS can hide in the bone marrow, avoiding drugs and later awakening to cause illness, according to new research that could point the way toward better treatments for the disease.

Finding that hide-out is a first step,Nike Shox Shoes but years of research lie ahead.

Dr. Kathleen Collins of the University of Michigan and her colleagues report in thisair shox week’s edition of the journal Nature Medicine that the HIV virus can infect long-lived bone marrow cells that eventually convert into blood cells.

The virus is dormant in the bone marrow cells, she said, but when those progenitor cells develop into blood cells,Nike Basketball Shoes it can be reactivated and cause renewed infection. The virus kills the new blood cells and then moves on to infect other cells, said.

“If we’re ever going to be able to find a way to get rid of the cells, the first step is to understand” where a latent infection can continue, Collins Nike Air Force Shoessaid.

In recent years, drugs have reduced AIDS deaths sharply, but patients need to keep taking the medicines for life or the infection comes back, she said. That’s an indication that while the drugs battle the active virus, some of the disease remains hidden away to flare up once the therapy is stopped.

One hide-out was found earlier in blood cells called macrophages. Another pool was discovered in memory T-cells, and research began on attacking those.

But those couldn’t account for all the HIV virus still circulating, Collins said, showing there were more locations to check out and leading her to study air forcethe blood cell progenitors.

Finding these sources of infection is important because eliminating them would allow AIDS patients to stop taking drugs after their infection was over. That’s critical inNike Dunk Shoes countries where the treatment is hard to afford and deliver.

“I don’t know how many people realize that although the drugs have reduced mortality we still have a long way to go,” Collins said in a telephone interview. “That is mainly because we can’t stop the drugs, peoplenike dunk have to take it for a lifetime.”

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, University of Michigan, Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship, National Science Foundation and a Bernard Maas Fellowship.

Concerns Over ‘Metal on Metal’ Hip Implants

March 4th, 2010

Some of the nike dunknation’s leading orthopedic surgeons have reduced or stopped use of a popular category of artificial hips amid concerns that the devices are causing severe tissue and bone damage in some patients, often requiring replacement surgery within a year or two.
In recent years, such devices, known as “metal on metal” implants, have been used in about one-third of the approximately 250,000 hip replacements performed annually in this country. They are used in conventional hip replacements and in a popular alternative procedure known as resurfacing.

The devices, whose ball-and-socket Nike Dunk Shoesjoints are made from metals like cobalt and chromium, became widely used in the belief that they would be more durable than previous types of implants.

The cause and the scope of the problem are not clear. But studies in recent years indicate that in some cases the devices can quickly begin to wear, generating high volumes of metallic debris that is absorbed into a patient’s body. That situation can touch off inflammatory reactions that cause pain in the groin, death of tissue in the hip joint and loss of surrounding bone.

Doctors at leading orthopedic centers like Rush University Medical Centerair force in Chicago and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., say they have treated a number of patients over the last year with problems related to the metal debris.

Artificial hips, intended to last 15 years or more, need early replacement far more frequently for reasons like dislocation than because of problems caused by metallic debris. But surgeons say that when metal particles are the culprit, the procedures to replace the devices can be far more complex and can leave some patients with lasting complications.

“What we see is soft-tissue destruction and destruction of bone,” said Dr. Young-Min Kwon, an orthopedic Nike Air Force Shoessurgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A recent editorial in a medical journal for orthopedic surgeons, The Journal of Arthroplasty, urged doctors to use the metal-on-metal devices only with “great caution, if at all.”

The limited studies conducted so far estimate that 1 to 3 percent of implant recipients could be affected by the problem. Given the large numberNike Basketball Shoes of people who have received metal devices, that could mean thousands of patients in the United States. Reports suggest that women are far more likely than men to be affected.

All the major orthopedics makers sell these devices. Several companies said in statements that the implants did not pose a significant risk and that the incidence of metal debris problems was extremely low.

For example, Zimmer Holdings, one of this country’s biggest producers of artificial joints, said in a statement that published data “suggests that ion release levels from Zimmer’sair shox metal-on-metal hip systems are commensurate with other metal-on-metal systems in the industry, and are not associated with significant risk to patients.”

But some surgeons are concerned that they may only now be seeing the leading edge of a mounting problem. The current generation of metal-on-metal devices is still relatively new,Nike Shox Shoes having been used increasingly over the last decade.

Studies show that the devices can shed atomic-size particles of metals like chromium and cobalt that can be readily absorbed by tissue or enter the bloodstream.

Surgeons at Rush University Medical Center have performed about two dozen replacement procedures because of metal debris over the last year, said Dr. Joshua J. Jacobs, the head the orthopedic surgery department there. A similar number of patients have had metal-on-metal hips removed at the Mayo Clinic, according to Dr. Daniel J. Berry, Mayo’s head of orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Berry added that surgeons at the Mayo Clinic had reduced by 80 percent their use of metal-on-metal implants over the last year in favor of those made from other materials, like combinationsAir Max of metal and plastic. Other doctors said that to be cautious they were also scaling back their use of the all-metal implants until the scientific evidence became clearer.

It is not clear whether some makers’ devices are more prone to the debris problem than others. But some experts argue that some manufacturers, in a rush to meet the demand for metal-on-metal devices, marketed some poorly designed implants and that some doctors fail to properly implant even well-designed ones.

First Gambit in Battle for Governor of Texas

March 3rd, 2010

HOUSTON — The confetti had barely settled at the victory parties after the Texas primaries on Tuesday when the Democratic nominee for governor, Bill White, took off the gloves and went after Gov. Rick Perry.
As he accepted his party’snike dunk nomination, Mr. White, the former mayor of Houston, called Mr. Perry a “career politician” who had cynically distracted voters from the problems Texas faced by complaining about Washington.

Mr. White’s effort to define the governor is the first gambit in what promises to be an uphill battle against an entrenched incumbent whose party has enjoyed a 10-point advantage in statewide races for more than a decade.

Mr. Perry, a staunch conservative who isNike Dunk Shoes seeking an unprecedented fourth term, has also tapped a wave of anger among many conservatives and independents about the federal government’s vast spending bills to bail out banks and spur the economy, as well as President Obama’s push to revamp the health care system. That anger at Washington is a potent force here and has made the political environment hard for any Democrat, political scientists said.

“It is sort of David versus Goliath,” Mr. White said at a news conference here on Wednesday morning. “There is no doubt that I start out as an underdog.”

Mr. Perry’s campaign was buoyed Tuesday by a strong victory over his chief Republican rival, air force Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. He won 51 percent of the vote to the senator’s 30 percent, in a race where turnout was 11 percent — more than twice as high as usual.

The strong showing of Debra Medina, a third candidate allied with the Tea Party movement who is more conservative than Mr. Perry on some issues and who received 18 percent of the vote, reflected the surging popular discontent on the right.

To win, Mr. White not only needs a high turnout among Democrats, but he needs to persuade most independents in the state to supportNike Air Force Shoes him, as well as to encourage some defections among Republicans, several political scientists said. That entails finding a set of state issues on which Mr. Perry is vulnerable without walking into the minefield of social issues that usually divide the parties, like abortion and gun control.

“White has got to make a case to fire Rick Perry, to show he’s somehow been negligent, incompetent, corrupt, etc.,” said Daron Shaw, a political scientist at the University of Texas.

David Carney, the political consultant who has shaped Mr. Perry’s message, said the governor would continue to portray himself as a conservative antidote to the Democrats controllingNike Basketball Shoes Congress and the White House, just as he did against Senator Hutchison.

The governor will emphasize Mr. White’s ties to Mr. Obama, whom he supported and advised, and to President Bill Clinton, under whom he served as deputy secretary of energy, Mr. Carney said. Mr. Perry will call attention to Mr. White’s history as a trial lawyer, a group not beloved among Texas Republicans, and he will also raise questions about Mr. White’s handling of Houston’s budget, asserting the city took on too much debt.

“I see zero chance a Democrat can win in this environment,” Mr. Carney said. “This is a tough sledge for any Democrat, but one with his baggage, I just don’t see it.”

One open question is whether the bitter battle between Ms. Hutchison, who had the support of many moderate Republicans, and Mr. Perry has left an opening for Mr. White to win over some moderates in the party, some political air shoxscientists said.

Richard Murray, a political scientist at the University of Houston, pointed out that Mr. Perry had alienated the Farm Bureau and other rural constituencies over the years with his policies, like seizing land for toll roads. Mr. White will have to make inroads with some of those voters to win, Mr. Murray said.

Mr. White, at his news conference, said he expected the governor to try to make the race a referendum on events in Washington, but he said he would challenge Mr. Perry on his record in Austin. Mr. White portrayed himself as a politicalNike Shox Shoes outsider and Mr. Perry as an “entrenched politician” trying to distract people from his shortcomings with attacks on the federal government.

Mr. White pointed out that Texas, though it has fared better than some states during the recession, still has the highest number of unemployed in its history. College tuition has skyrocketed, and local property taxes continue to rise because of cutbacks in state financingAir Max to schools, he said.

“Perry’s problem is his job performance,” Mr. White said.

Newly Stalled Toyota Blocks Rivals, Too

March 2nd, 2010

When a car breaks down cheap shoesahead of you, it isn’t unusual to feel a certain deplorable smugness as your own engine keeps purring. But the poor unfortunate stuck in the road can still slow you down.

Take Toyota Motor, which Tuesdayshoes rolled out new customer incentives to help repair the damage done by its recall fiasco. Of all the foreign auto makers, Toyota epitomized the competitive pressure that has ground down the U.S. market share of Ford Motor, General Motors and Chrysler for decades.

The televised unraveling of wholesale shoesToyota’s reputation for quality could only be good for Detroit, right? Ford, for example, certainly capitalized on Toyota’s woes, with sales growth in February busting through analysts’ estimates.

Toyota’s resorting to incentives, however, nike shoesraises the worrying prospect of a price war. Indeed, industrywide, average incentives to customers rose month-on-month in February by 10.6% to $2,588 a vehicle, according to Edmunds.com, as Toyota’s competitors tried to lure away its customers. Rebates and cheap financing are useful for winning business, but they undermine the No. 1 priority for the Detroit three: restoring profitability in North America.

As if in response to Toyota, cheap nike shoes GM Tuesday offered 0% financing for 60 months or more on a range of 2009 and 2010 models, following a disappointing February and a recall of its own.

Brian Johnson of Barclays Capital estimates the costNike Air Jordan Shoes of such financing at $4,657 a vehicle—more than $2,000 above last month’s industry average incentive package. The critical question is whether this is a temporary tactic centered on Toyota’s problems or signals a broader breakdown in pricing discipline. After all, consumers are still hurting and the industry remains structurally oversupplied.

Two Dubai Suspects Traveled to U.S.

February 28th, 2010

DUBAI—At least cheap shoestwo of the 26 suspects sought by Dubai police for the alleged killing of a top Hamas leader appear to have entered the U.S. shortly after his death, according to people familiar with the situation.

Records shared between international investigators show that one of the suspects entered the U.S. on Feb. 14, carrying a British passport, according to a person familiar with the situation. The other suspect, carrying an Irish passport, entered the U.S. on Jan. 21, according to this person. Senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s body was found in a Dubai hotel room on Jan. 20.

There aren’t records of either manugg boots on sale leaving the U.S., though investigators can’t be sure the two are still in the country, according to this person. Since the two were traveling with what investigators believe to be fraudulently issued passports, they may have traveled back out of the U.S. with different, bogus travel documents.

The suspected U.S. travel broadens to American shores the international manhunt triggered by Dubai’s investigation into the death of Mr. Mabhouh. Dubai police have already identified two U.S. financial companies they believe issued and distributed several credit cards used by 14 of the suspects in the alleged killing.

A U.S. State Departmentugg boots for sale spokesman declined to comment.

A spokesman for Interpol, which is also investigating the murder, declined to comment.

Separately, Dubai police said cheap ugg bootsSunday that forensic results showed the drug succinylcholine in Mr. Mabhouh’s bloodstream at the time of his death, suggesting he had been incapacitated by the muscle relaxant before being suffocated.

United Arab Emirates authorities have sought international arrest warrants for the 26 suspects, whom they caught on closed-circuit TV arriving at Dubai’s airport and checking into their hotels. Some used disguises, and two of them shared an elevator ride with their alleged victim, according to footage released by police.

Dubai released photos, passportsugg boots and travel details of the 26, all of whom had landed in Dubai with European or Australian passports. Many of the individuals identified by Dubai police surfaced within days. However, they looked nothing like the photos on the passports used in Dubai; the passport holders appeared instead to be victims of identity fraud. Britain, France, Ireland, Germany and Australia have all said they believe their passports were issued and used fraudulently in the case.

Dubai’s police chief has said he is 99% certain that Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency is behind the killing. But he hasn’t provided any evidence. Other officials here appear more circumspect, and say Dubai and U.A.E. officials are concentrating on identifying and apprehending the suspects before blaming anyone.

Israeli officials have neitherugg confirmed nor denied any involvement, a longstanding practice. Last week, Israel’s foreign minister said there was no proof implicating Israel.

The investigation could prove an irritant to U.S.-Israeli ties if Mossad is implicated. European and Australian governments have called in their Israeli ambassadors demanding answers to how their passports were misused, though officials have stopped short of accusing Israel of involvement.

The U.A.E. government would seekugg boots the extradition of any suspects found in the U.S., said an Emirati official. If Israel was implicated, the Obama administration’s relationship with that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could come under further strain. Washington and Israel have publicly sparred in recent months on issues related to the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. The Obama administration says it is continuing to work with Israel on the possible resumption of peace talks, and U.S. officials say they are “hopeful” that negotiations can resume shortly.

According to the person familiar with the matter, one of the suspects, traveling with a British passport identifying him as Roy Allan Cannon, entered the U.S. on Feb. 14. Another suspect, traveling as Irishman Evan Dennings, entered the country on Jan. 21, a day after Mr. Mabhouh’s body was discovered.

It wasn’t clear from where either man was traveling. Dubai authorities have previously said the suspect traveling as Mr. Dennings left Dubai on Jan. 20 on his way to Zurich.

Last week, the Associated Press identified ugg bootsa British citizen named Roy Allan Cannon as having emigrated to Israel from Britain in 1979. His son told the AP his father was a victim of identity theft, and that “it’s clear that illegal use was made of personal information.” The Irish government said last week it believed Mr. Dennings was also the victim of identity fraud; he couldn’t be reached for comment.

Race Is On to Pin Blame For High Health-Care Costs

February 25th, 2010

A battle over who to blameNike Shox Shoes for rising health-care costs is escalating, as groups seek to pin the problem on each other and say none of the health-care legislation under consideration does enough to solve it.

U.S. spending on health care reached $2.5 Air Maxtrillion in 2009, according to federal estimates. It is expected to jump to $4.5 trillion in 10 years.

Insurers contend that they must pass on ever-higher bills from hospitals and doctors.Nike Air Max Shoes Hospitals say they are struggling with more uninsured patients, demands by doctors for top salaries, and underpayments from Medicare and Medicaid.

And doctors say they are strong-armed by insurance monopolies and hampered by medical malpractice costs.

In the rush to point fingers, few solutions are emerging.

“It’s always someone else’s fault,” said Robert Laszewski, president of health-care consulting firm Health Policy & Strategy air jordanAssociates. “There is not an incentive for these people to cooperate because the game they are all playing is getting a bigger piece of the pie.”

The issue has come into sharp relief as WellPoint Inc. has sought to defend its plan to raise some prices in California by up to 39%.

In a hearing Wednesday on Capitol Hill, WellPoint Chief Executive Angela Braly singled out dominant hospital systems for demanding 40% rate increases and drug companies for roughly 20% profit margins.

A WellPoint spokeswoman said that at least one hospital had asked for a 220% payment increase.

Many Democrats have cited lack of competition among insurers as a driver of higher prices. On Wednesday, the House of Nike Air Jordan ShoesRepresentatives voted to repeal a longstanding insurance-industry exemption from federal antitrust laws. The bill now heads to the Senate, where its future is less certain.

Doctors complain of a lack of competition among insurers, as well.

A report by the American Medical Association this week argues that 500 insurance-company mergers in the past 12 years have led to markets dominated by one cheap nike shoesor two health plans.

This year, two insurers control 70% of the market in 24 states, up from 18 last year, the report said.

“There is no other company for doctors to go to” when an insurer comes to them with terms that they find unfavorable, said AMA President James Rohack.

But insurers say is it doctors and hospitals that have gotten too powerful through consolidation.

A study published Thursday in the journal Health Affairs appears to back up their point, saying that insurers are weakened in their negotiations by theirnike shoes inability to exclude prominent doctors and hospitals from networks.

Authors from the Center for Studying Health System Change, a nonpartisan research group, conducted 300 interviews with California doctors and hospital and insurance executives in late 2008.

The study said two big networks of providers now dominate the northern part of the state: Sutter Health owns two dozen California hospitals and medical centers, wholesale shoes and Catholic Healthcare West runs 33 hospitals.

In addition, the study said, doctors who are increasingly banding together for negotiating power are commanding yearly double-digit payment increases.

Hospitals and doctors shot back that the study was largely anecdotal and said integration improved efficiency.

Catholic Healthcare West said it took on $1.5 billion in bad debt from government underpayments last year; its size, it added, makes it possible to achieve some savings.

Sutter Health said increases in its reimbursement rates from private insurers have been in the single digits.

“We are doing our best to keep costs down because these health-care premium increases are not sustainable,” said Bill Gleeson, vice president of communications a Sutter Health.

Space Pioneer Burt Rutan Blasts NASA Plan

February 24th, 2010

Commercial space pioneerNike Shox Shoes Burt Rutan has sharply criticized Obama administration proposals to outsource key portions of NASA’s manned space program to private firms.

The White House wants NASA to Air Maxuse outside firms to develop and operate new rockets and spacecraft that would transport astronauts into orbit and beyond, functions that had previously been considered a core function of the agency. Mr. Rutan, a veteran aerospace designer and entrepreneur, in a letter addressed to lawmakers on Capitol Hill, says he is “fearful that the commercial guys will fail” to deliver on the promises to get beyond low earth orbit, and that the policy risks setting back the nation’s space program.

“That would be a very big mistake for Nike Air Max ShoesAmerica to make,” according to the letter sent to lawmakers that is expected to be released Wednesday during a Senate Commerce subcommittee hearing on the future of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
